It’s the first quarter of 2025, and Motorola smartphones have started receiving the Android 15 update. However, some users are experiencing bugs after updating, making their devices completely unusable.
According to a report from Android Authority, the app launcher is crashing frequently on Motorola smartphones after the Android 15 update. But that’s not the only issue, Moto users have also reported several other bugs, such as themes resetting to the default yellow color, the battery saver schedule reverting to 20% after a restart, and the default calling SIM being set to ‘Always ask‘.

Fix App Launcher Crashes in Motorola smartphones after Android 15
Before we proceed, keep in mind that these issues are caused by the Android 15 update. That means there are only two ways to fix the app launcher crash. The first option is to roll back to Android 14, but Motorola hasn’t officially allowed that. The second is to wait for Motorola to release a software patch to fix the issue.
And as we all know, Motorola has had a rocky history with software support. There’s no clear timeline for when they will address this issue and release a patch to fix it.
So, until Motorola releases a patch, I’ve found a temporary way to help you use your Motorola smartphone normally.
Method 1
Access the notification bar from the lock screen > Find Settings icon > Settings > System updates > Check For Updates
1. If the app launcher is crashing repeatedly and you can’t open any apps or features, first lock your Motorola smartphone and try accessing the Notification Panel from the Lock screen.
2. Once you’ve accessed the notification panel, look for the Settings icon in the bottom right corner. Tap on it (unlock your phone if required).
3. In Settings, scroll down and find “System updates.”
4. Under System Updates, tap on “Check for Updates” to see if Motorola has released a software patch. If an update is available, install it as soon as possible!
If no software patch is available, try the next method.
Method 2
Notification panel > Tap on the Settings icon > Go to Apps > Default Apps > Home App > Select a different launcher.
1. Lock your smartphone and try to access the Notification Panel from the Lock screen again.
2. Tap on the Settings icon in the bottom right corner and go to Mobile Settings.
3. Scroll down and select “Apps,” then tap on “Default Apps.”
4. Click on “Home App” and look for any other available launcher besides the Moto App Launcher. If you find one, set it as the Default launcher.
If you don’t see any other launcher installed, you’ll need to download one from the Google Play Store. However, since your app launcher is crashing, accessing the Play Store might be difficult. If that’s the case, try the next method.
Method 3
Settings > About Phone > Android Version > Android Security Update > Redirects to Browser > Search ‘Microsoft Launcher’ > Install & Set as Default Launcher.
1. I assume you’re still in Mobile Settings. If not, follow the same steps to access Settings from the notification panel.
2. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings menu, tap on “About Phone,” then scroll down and tap on “Android Version.”
3. Look for “Android Security Update” and tap on it. This will open your default browser.
4. Ignore the tab that opens and open a new tab in your browser. Search for “Microsoft Launcher” and tap on the first result.
5. This will redirect you to the Google Play Store. Install Microsoft Launcher from there.
6. Once installed, go back to Mobile Settings via the notification panel. Scroll down to “Apps” > “Default Apps” > “Home App.”
7. Select Microsoft Launcher as the default launcher.
And that’s it! Now you can use your smartphone without app launcher crashes.

This is how you can fix App launcher crashes and continue using your Motorola smartphone normally. However, keep in mind that this is not a permanent solution, it’s just a temporary workaround for devices that have become unusable after the Android 15 update. You can use this method until Motorola releases a software patch to fix the issue.
